St Michael’s Club number 10 jersey to remain retired

By Emma Ryan

THE number 10 jersey for St Michael’s GAA club remains hanging up the dressing room unworn since last October, and is likely to remain there for the foreseeable future.

The committee of the Dunfanaghy based GAA club, which is local to Creeslough, made the decision to retire the number 10 jersey last October as a mark of respect to the ten people who lost their lives in the Creeslough tragedy.

The Donegal Senior Championship started last Friday, and St Michael’s kicked off their campaign against Glenfin without a number 10 jersey in their line up. Chairman of the club Liam McElhinney said the jersey is still hanging up in the dressing room in Dunfanaghy.

“We made the decision to retire the jersey last year after the tragedy and it will stay hanging up in the dressing room.

“Different committees can make decisions in years to come but at the minute it remains retired.

“We wanted to pay our respects to the victims of the explosion as the club had close involvement in the tragedy and it was done as a mark of respect.

“Things can change but for the foreseeable future the jersey will be retired,” said Mr McElhinney.

The GAA Club plays a major part in the community of Creeslough, and in the days following the explosion on October 7 2022, the club was a source of support to all those impacted by the tragedy. Victims of the Creeslough explosion were Catherine O’Donnell, (39) and her son James Monaghan (13), Martin McGill (49), Jessica Gallagher (24), James O’Flaherty (48), Martina Martin (49), Hugh Kelly (59), Robert Garwe (50) and his daughter Shauna Flanagan Garwe (5), and Leona Harper (14).
