Shock and hurt after headstones damaged in Raphoe

by Louise Doyle

THE Dean of St Eunan’s Cathedral in Raphoe has told of her shock and distress after headstones were yet again smashed in the graveyard – the second time in a matter of months.

Two headstones were smashed and another was knocked over in the incident of criminal damage, which occurred sometime between Thursday, April 18 at 6.15pm and 9.30am the following morning.

It comes after eight headstones at St Eunan’s, The Diamond, were damaged sometime between Tuesday, December 19, 2023 and Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

The Very Reverend Liz Fitzgerald says she has been forced to lock the cathedral. She said many parishioners sought a “gentle space” and “quiet time” in the cathedral, but now the cathedral has to be locked because of the “shocking and distressing” actions of those responsible.

Meanwhile, gardaí are anxious to progress this investigation and have appealed to anyone who can offer any relevant information to make contact with them.

“If anybody observed any suspicious activity around the Cathedral or on its grounds between those times we ask them to contact Gardaí in Letterkenny on (074) 9167100,” said a garda spokesperson.”
