FAMILY, friends and work colleagues of a young woman who died after being struck by a garda in Donegal almost one year ago have taken part in a special walk in her memory.
The 21-year-old hairdresser, from Derry, had been out for the night in Donegal when she was hit by a garda car at 3.15am on May 21, 2023 at Ludden just outside Buncrana.
An investigation into Ms Browne’s death was referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission following the incident. In July last, that investigation was re-designated to establish if the actions of Gardai amount to criminal in nature.
A spokesperson for GSOC told the Donegal News: “GSOC’s investigation is ongoing, and we have no further update for you at this time.”
In recent days, Rebecca’s loved ones took part in a special walk in her memory in aid of Make a Wish Foundation.
They also gathered outside the hairdressing salon she worked in on Spencer Road in Derry to release one blue balloon for every year of the young woman’s life.
In a post, a spokesperson for Sage Hair and Beauty said: Thank you everyone who helped contribute to making Rebecca’s walk in aid of Make A Wish Foundation on Sunday so special. We were completely overwhelmed with the turnout and will be forever grateful to every single last one of you who helped us… baking, donating or showing up to remember our Rebecca.
“She would be so proud and it’s so lovely for her parents Jerry and Lynn to know how special she was to us all and she hasn’t been (and won’t ever be) forgotten.”
