Optum workers switch their day jobs to volunteering

STAFF at Letterkenny Optum swapped their day jobs for volunteering work to give back to the local community.

As part of the company’s Give Day, hundreds of staff members of Optum volunteered at a range of activities across Letterkenny and the surrounding areas.

This year, the groups in Letterkenny carried out a number of clean ups at various areas, volunteered in charity shops and at the Donegal Hospice.

Stephen McDaid of Optum said Give Day is a special day on the company’s calendar.

“In Letterkenny alone, we had volunteers who assisted in the Saint Vincent De Paul shop, carried out cleaning and painting in the domestic violence Women’s Centre, hosted a bake off and foodbank drive at the Windy Hall Campus while we also helped out in the Donegal Hospice.

“Clean ups were also carried out in many areas including Letterkenny Town Park, Rathmullan Beach and the Cathedral Quarter,” said Mr McDaid.

At Donegal Hospice, volunteers were on hand to help with rearranging pictures, cleaning up the outside grounds and helped with cleaning and fixing furniture which was in storage.

Mr McDaid continued, “Usually employees will come to us with ideas of what they want to do.

“It is possible that we had employees who have first hand experience of using the Donegal Hospice service in their own families and they felt the need to give back to them.

“We firmly believe in the significance of giving back to our communities that we live and work in.

“We want to make a positive impact in our community.

“Give Day is an opportunity for employees to steps away from the desks and roll up their sleeves and contribute to matters that are important to them,” said Mr McDaid.
