Permanent closure of Rathmullan Post Office ‘likely’

by Louise Doyle

THE permanent closure of Rathmullan Post Office is “likely” as efforts to secure a contract are proving unsuccessful, An Post has said.

Rathmullan Post Office closed its doors on April 12 last following 53 years of service after its owners Bernadette and John Kelly retired.

Customers were transferred to the office in Ramelton.

Responding to a query from the Donegal News on the current situation, a spokesperson for An Post said despite advertising for a contractor to take on the running of the post office interest has not been forthcoming.

In a statement, the spokesperson said: “We had advertised the contract for Rathmullan on two occasions but to no avail.

“We will continue looking for a contractor to take on the running of the post office in Rathmullan and will consider the closure as temporary.

“But in the absence of interest so far permanent closure does seems a likely outcome.”

The closure of the post office had been described as “another rural blow to rural Ireland”.
