SEVERAL Donegal motorists were among the hundreds of drivers caught speeding across the country during National Slow Down Day.
During the 24 hour period, which ended at 7am this morning (Wednesday), GoSafe personnel checked a total of 173,811 vehicles nationwide and detected 628 motorists breaking the speed limit.
In Donegal the top speed recorded was on the N15 at Drumnagahan where a vehicle was travelling at 113km/h in a 100km/h zone.
On the R265 Porthall, Ballindrait a driver was caught travelling at 88km/h in a 50km/h zone. On the N15 Mullandrait, Stranorlar a motorist was clocked doing 86km/h in a 60km/h zone and on the R250 Conwal, Letterkenny a vehicle was travelling at 96km/h in a 80km/h zone.
A spokesperson for the Gardaí said: “An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.”
They said an example of a motorist putting themselves and others at risk was a driver on the N6 Baile An Phoill, Gaillimh who was travelling at a speed of 117km/h in a 50km/h zone.
