Big interest in first Darkness into Light in Burtonport

BURTONPORT will host its first ever Darkness into Light this May and some 100 people have already registered to take part.

The local event takes place on Saturday, May 11 starting at 4.15 am at the Burtonport Community Centre.

Organiser Aoife McGarvey explained to the Donegal News this week that there used to be a Darkness into Light event in Maghery but it has not happened for a number of years.

“My Nanny was the drive that got me involved and working on it. We had a family member who passed by suicide and we wanted to remember him. Hopefully this first will be the first of many in Burtonport. We would like to see as many people as possible join us on the morning of May 11 at 4.15 am,” Aoife said.

In order to spread the word they are holding a number of information days in the local supermarkets around the area where people can register and get information. They can also register online on the Darkness into Light website and put in Burtonport as their chosen venue.

“Even if someone leaves it to the last minute they can just show up at the Community Centre and join us and put a wee donation in the box,” she added.

Darkness into Light was started by Pieta House in 2006 and is sponsored by Electric Ireland.

Pieta was established to provide free, accessible support to people affected by suicide and self-harm.

It now has over 20 centres nationwide, including one in Letterkenny. It has over 300 staff and offers a variety of supports to people impacted by suicide and self-harm, completely free of charge.
