One of Donegal’s best-known chefs – Anthony Armstrong – will head to Kinsale this weekend to represent The Food Coast, Donegal in the 5th All-Ireland Chowder Cook-Off competition.
Taking place in the Acton Hotel, the All-Ireland Chowder Cook-Off will feature 32 professional restaurant chefs, fishermen and makers of commercial chowders, each selected to represent their county, in competition for the title of All-Ireland Chowder Champion.
Donegal’s representative heads to the Cork venue with a high pedigree to compete for The Food Coast, Donegal.
Not only has Anthony been a past President of the Panel of Chefs of Ireland, he has also held the role of both PR and marketing officer for the prestigious organisation.
Apart from this heavy workload, Anthony was also the culinary director of the panel of chefs and demonstration chef with the N.I Seafood/BIM and Ulster pork forum.
This talented and innovative chef has also been associated with some of the best restaurants in Ireland and the UK including The Tower in Knightsbridge, The Lobster Point in Warrenpoint and more recently the Filet of Sole in Donegal Town and Executive Chef at Henry’s Bar and Restaurant Cashelgarren, Co Sligo.
Last year Anthony received the accolade of being appointed a member of the World Association of Chefs Society where he is also an accredited judge.
According to Michael Tunney, Head of Enterprise at Donegal Local Enterprise Office, Donegal Food Coast has the role of acting as a central platform for establishing Donegal as a “food county” – a place with a vibrant food culture and food economy.
“There is real momentum building across this sector and it is all about raising awareness of what we have on our county locally and what we can do with our produce. We are delighted to be in a position to assist and ensure that Donegal is represented at this prestigious national competition.”
The All-Ireland Chowder Cook-Off is the highlight of a two day Family Festival that will take over the streets of Kinsale on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th April.
Members of the public will be the judges in the All-Ireland Chowder Cook-Off, with their €10 ticket also serving as their voting card, enabling them to sample all chowders from the individual stalls, before casting a vote for the All-Ireland Chowder Champion 2015.
