Businesses urged to apply for support after flooding

By Róise Collins

SMALL businesses affected by the recent flash flooding in east Donegal are being urged to apply for flooding relief funds, as only two enquiries have been made so far.

The Emergency Humanitarian Support Scheme, which is to be distributed by the Irish Red Cross, was announced last week to provide support to small businesses and voluntary organisations that were affected by the recent flooding.

A spokesperson from the Irish Red Cross told the Donegal News that they are encouraging businesses affected to apply if they meet the requirements of the scheme, particularly those who could not secure flooding insurance cover.

Following the flash flooding it emerged that ten commercial premises and eight domestic properties were affected.

But so far only two enquiries have been made, the Irish Red Cross has revealed.

One was from a business and one from a business representative group on behalf of others, both in Raphoe.

The scheme provides an emergency humanitarian support contribution towards the costs of returning business premises to their pre-flooding condition including the replacement of flooring, fixtures, fittings, and damaged stock.

However, the scheme will not provide a contribution to the loss of earnings or loss of business goodwill.

The scheme is targeted at small businesses, with up to 20 employees.

There are two stages, the first stage will commence immediately and will provide a contribution of up to €5,000, depending on the scale of damage incurred.

In the event that businesses have incurred significant damages above €5,000, the second stage will provide a means to seek further support.

This will be a more lengthy process requiring a more detailed assessment.

The total level of support available for both stages combined will be capped at €20,000 per property.

The closing date for receipt of applications is Friday, September 1, 2023.
