SENATOR Niall Blaney this week said he planned to be a conduit between the European Parliament and the people of the Midlands North West Constituency.
The Fanad born senator is now on the campaign trail having been selected by the Fianna Fáil party to contest this EU Constituency in the June European elections along with Deputy Barry Cowan and Senator Lisa Chambers.
Celebrations were held in the Silver Tassie Hotel on Sunday night when Senator Blaney and his team returned from Sligo after official confirmation he is now a candidate for Europe.
It was on Thursday the party’s national constituencies committee confirmed it had added the two senators to the ticket, meaning Fianna Fáil will now run three candidates in the five-seat constituency in the election on June 7.
It is understood pressure from both the Donegal and Sligo party members led to the change of heart and included both senators.
Speaking to the Donegal News yesterday Senator Blaney said the campaign would now begin in earnest. He acknowledged that having three candidates would cause further division in the vote, than just a two-way split, between him and Deputy Cowan.
“Our campaign thus far has been well organised and I have a particularly good team on the ground and not just in Donegal. It is about how issues affect people locally are influenced at a European level and I aim to be a conduit to connect the two,” he said.
