OVER 400 people took part in the Run in the Dark fund-raising 5K run and walk in Glenveagh Castle on Wednesday night.
Organised by Gweedore woman Sonia McGarvey, whose daughter Noirin (11) has a spinal cord injury after a car accident in Dunlewey seven years ago, the event proved to be a resounding success.
“I was overwhelmed by the response. It’s a true example of all the support that we have received since Noirin’s injury and which we continue to receive on a daily basis,” Sonia said.
All-Ireland winning Donegal defender Eamon McGee started the run which was held simultaneously with similar events in Dublin, Cork, Belfast, Manchester and London. They have been organised to support Mark Pollock to explore the frontiers of recovery for people with spinal cord injuries by creating a global fund-raising community through sport.
“I need to apologise to anyone who did not receive a run pack on the night and I would like to assure everyone that they will eventually receive one,” Sonia said.
“There are a few people that I am indebted to and without their help it would not have run so smoothly. Firstly, to all the marshals that did an excellent job and kept everyone safe and allowed the event to run smoothly. I wish I could name you all but you know who you are,” she said.
“To my husband Ronan who helped with the organisation on the night at the castle and to my many friends who supported me and cared for Aodan and special thanks to Brid nihici who cared for Noirin on the night as she has been doing fantastically for the last seven years. We would be lost without her.
“To all of Noirin’s friends that supported her so well on the night as they usually do – she is blessed to have such good friends,” she added.
