AS THE final days of Bundoran Town Council draw closer, so too does the launch of the 100 Years of Democracy exhibition which will mark the centenary of the council and highlight its history and achievements.
The project, which is a joint effort between Bundoran Community Library, The Magh Ene Historical Society, Discover Bundoran and supported by Bundoran Town Council, will be located in the lobby area of the civic offices at Station Road when the exhibition is launched on this Monday, March 31 and will be open to the public during council office opening hours from April 1.
A variety of speakers will talk on the night including Dr. Arlene Crampsie who will talk about the establishment of Urban District Councils in Ireland with particular reference to Bundoran, with the exhibition itself being opened by RTE’s Northwest correspondent Eileen Magnier.
The whole premise of the exhibition is to look back over a centenary of the council and to celebrate its achievements over that time. Exhibits will look back at the formation of the council in 1914, the fire service, the lifeguarding of the beach, Bundoran’s membership of the Douzelage town twinning programme and lots more. Meanwhile physical exhibits will include old newspapers, original byelaws, an address written by the council in 1926 as well as the original Merryweather Fire Pump purchased by the Urban District Council in the late 1920s. This is currently on display in the council office lobby for anyone to have a look at.
One of the Exhibition directors and Tourism Officer Shane Smyth said: “We are delighted with the level of interest in our forthcoming exhibition which is a joint effort between Bundoran Community Library, Magh Ene Historical Society and Discover Bundoran. So much archive material has come to light since we started working on it and we are confident that we will have a very interesting exhibition for the people of Bundoran to see from the 1st of April. I would like to thank all of those who have contributed in any way so far – your efforts are appreciated.”
As part of the exhibition, a time capsule will be put together and more details of that will be released in the near future.
