TWO talented Donegal musicians are set to highlight the Irish language sean-nós song tradition in an exciting new TV show.
Bláth na hÓige is a new series that showcases the multi-faceted talents of Gaoth Dobhair’s Cathal Ó Curráin and Megan Nic Ruairí from Rann na Feirste.
The series follows young singers at the early stage of their musical careers where they collaborate under the musical direction of renowned sean-nós singer Síle Denvir and the illustrious fiddle player Colm Mac an
Iomaire at Stiúideo Cuan in Conamara, as they creatively explore and make their own of our unique sean-nós tradition.
The series begins on Thursday, April 13 at 8pm on TG4 with Donegal singer and bouzouki, banjo and fiddle player, Cathal Ó Curráin featuring in the first episode. He has traveled the world playing with groups such as
The Conifers, The High Seas and The Friel Sisters. Cathal Ó Curráin has been involved in the singing and instrumental music tradition of the Tír Conaill Gaeltacht since he was very young and now he is one of the most talented musicians in the country.
His debut solo album Cosán Ceoil was launched in 2022. Cathal won the ‘Best Emerging Artist’ award at the RTÉ Folk Awards i 2022.
Megan Nic Ruairí from Rann na Feirste.
Rann na Feirste native Megan Nic Ruairí will appear in episode six on May 18.
Megan is one of the most talented young musicians and singers emerging in the country. Megan was born in England but it was in Rann na Feirste that she began her musical journey as a member of the groups Clann Mic Ruairí and Big Love.
With most of her songs written from a piano facing the sea, the musician has always struck inspiration from the beautiful landscapes of her home in Rann na Feirste.
So much so, that the seascapes heard on her debut single were recorded below her house tying her art to that which inspires her, accentuating an integral aspect of the song.
Megan comes from a musical family, well known for their contribution to the Irish music scene having toured extensively throughout the world.
Aside from performing alongside her family, Megan has appeared on many BBC productions and has sung on national radio gaining her a vast universal following as a solo artist.
The TG4 show will run on Thursdays for six weeks from April 13 at 8pm.
