SHANE ON THE DOUBLE

SOCCER – UNDER 14 SOUTH DONEGAL SCHOOLBOYS DIVISION

Erne Wanderers 1 – 3 Dunkineely Celtic

What a great start to the season for the boys from Darney Park. The first game of their league campaign started with an away trip under the lights at the Lakeside Astro pitch in Ballyshannon on Saturday evening.

It only took the visitors only three minutes to take the lead when midfielder Danny Walsh gave Gallagher in the Erne goals no chance when he reacted quickest when a free kick fell at his feet six yards out.

The hosts were back on level terms on ten minutes when after a free kick by Dylan Gallagher put the away sides defence under pressure which resulted in James Stewart stroking the ball to the net.

The last 10 minutes of the first half belonged to the away side. Centre forward Shane Redmond raced through on goal but shot just wide but he would make amends a few minutes later when he beat a few defenders inside the area and side footed to the net. In the last minute of the half, Dunkineely’s right winger Johnny Sweeney had a shot cleared of the line by Ayres.

Midway through the second half Paul Murray from the home side nearly levelled only for and amazing save from Patrick Gallagher who tipped his shot onto the crossbar. Erne werepressing now for the equaliser but were leaving gaps at the back. From one such break Walsh was unlucky to get his second of the day when he shot just wide.

Eight mins remaining and from a ball over the top fromJack Flannery put Redmond on the attack and he rounded the keeper to leave it 3-1 to the away side. Flannery was unlucky in the last minute when his shot from 30yds came back off the crossbar.

With conditions very difficult to play in due to high winds and heavy rain both managers should be proud of the way both sides gave their all.

Best for Erne Wanderers were Cian McEniff, Paul Murray and Sean Taylor.
