Rónán Beo @3 on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta was named best Irish-language radio programme at the PPI Awards, the Irish radio Oscars, on Friday night.

The award was accepted by programme producer Dónall Mac Ruairí at a gala event in the Lyrath Hotel in Kilkenny.

Ceannaire of Raidió na Gaeltachta, Edel Ní Chuireáin, congratulated the programme team on the award: “This PPI award is a great tribute to the work of Rónán Beo@3 team who continue to bring us an excellent radio programme week in week out, and as a result have another award to add to their growing list of accolades, and rightly so”.

Séamus Mac Géidigh, Regional Manager in Donegal, said: “We are very proud of the Rónán Beo team for winning this award. The programme is unique in its ability to appeal to listeners of every age and background, and Rónán is a naturally gifted broadcaster.

“I’d like to congratulate him, programme producer Dónall Mac Ruairí and administrator Eimear Ní Fhearraigh on a great team effort.”

Rónán Beo @ 3 is broadcast from RnaG’s Doirí Beaga studios Tues-Fri from 3-5 pm and is presented by Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí, with Dónall Mac Ruairí producing and Eimear Ní Fhearraigh as programme administrator.

The light entertainment programme includes a mix of music, chat and interviews, and Rónán’s unique style of presenting is a key element in the show’s success – an ability to deal sensitively with subjects when necessary, a great sense of fun, a genuine curiosity and a touch of anarchy.

Rónán was also awarded the prize for radio personality of the year at the Celtic Media Awards last year, and the programme was named programme of the year at the Oireachtas media awards, Gradaim Chumarsáide an Oireachtais, in 2011.
