KILCAR booked a semi-final meeting with Four Masters following this comfortable win against Dungloe in Ardara yesterday afternoon.
Trailing by six points to no score at the end of the first quarter, things didn’t too good for John McNulty’s young charges.
Indeed, such was the early concern that the Kilcar manager felt the need to spring Donegal U21 player Eoin McHugh (throat infection) from the bench after just ten minutes.
The substitution sparked some much needed life into his team mates, none more so than captain Patrick McBrearty who proceeded to tear the Dungloe defence to shreds.
The All-Ireland winner finished with a personal tally of 3-06 while his finger prints were all over Kilcar’s other two goal as well as most of their points.
Ryan McHugh’s pass put McBrearty clear to net the game’s opening goal on 15 minutes. McBrearty’s hand pass put Aaron Doherty through for goal number two two minutes later. He added two frees and with a point from his midfield partner Conal Gilmore, Kilcar had scored 2-3 without reply in a blistering five minute spell.
Further points from McBrearty (2, 1 ’45) and Cormac Cannon saw the men from Towney go into the break four points to the good.
Playing with the advantage of the breeze, things had started so well for Dessie Gallagher’s young Dungloe team.
Team captain Christopher McGlynn opened the scoring from a free before Conor Greene, McGlynn, the Neely brothers, Adam and Luke, and David McCarron put them six clear after ten minutes.
Their only other first half scores came from Ryan Rodgers and McGlynn (free) although they will point to the fact that Kilcar keeper Kevin Doyle made two excellent saves to deny Greene and McCarron.
McBrearty (2) and Ryan McHugh, two members of Jim McGuinness’ Donegal senior squad, got Kilcar up and running at the start of the second half before McBrearty netted his second goal. Another McBrearty score, a free, saw the Kilcar advantage extended out to eleven points by the three-quarter mark.
A Martin Redmond penalty and another three-point from substitute Daniel Bonner in as many minutes sparked some much needed life into Dungloe but that was quickly extinguished when Redmond saw red on 49 minutes – a second yellow card offence.
Thereafter it was all Kilcar with McBrearty completing a hat-trick of goals before setting up Daragh O’Donnell for goal number five. Eoin McHugh (2), Andrew McClean and Cormac Cannon (2) added points. Remarkably, the final pass for all six scores came from McBrearty.
On yesterday’s form, you would never tire watching the Kilcar captain and Four Masters are now faced with the unenviable task of curbing him next time around.
Winners of the U21 title two years ago, most of this Kilcar squad also won the Minor title in 2010. They now look hungry for more success in 2013.
