Packie Bonner and family mourn death of mother in Burtonport

FORMER Irish International goalkeeper Packie Bonner is mourning the death his mother.

Gracie Bonner (90), Cloughglass, Burtonport, passed away at Dungloe Community Hospital on Tuesday night surrounded by her family. She had been ill for a short while.

Packie (54) and his siblings and wider family had been with Gracie in her last days. She is survived by twin sons, Packie and Denis and daughters, Mamie, Margaret, Cathy, Anne and Bee, grandchildren and a wide circle of family and friends.

Packie, earned 80 caps for Ireland after making his international debut on his 21st birthday. He is best remembered for his famous save from Daniel Timofte of Romania at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy during the knockout stage.

He made 483 appearances for Celtic in a glittering career from 1978- 1998. Packie’s twin brother, Denis, is a former League of Ireland footballer with Galway Utd, Sligo Rovers and Finn Harps.

The removal will take place from Mc Glynn’s Funeral Home today (Wednesday) December 17 at 3pm going to her late residence.
Funeral Mass will take place on Friday at 11am in St. Columba’s Church, Acres with burial afterwards in Belcruit cemetery
