More than 420 babies born in first three months of year

MORE than 420 babies were born in Donegal in the first three months of this year.

Latest figures released by the Central Statistics Office reveal 421 babies were born in the county between January to March, 2022.

The figures show there were in all 16, 131 babies born between January and March of this year. Nationally, there has been a 16 per cent rise in the number of births in the first three months of this year, compared with the same time frame in 2021.

The figures also provide information on the number of births in the county registered within a marriage and outside a marriage or civil partnership.

Births within marriage accounted for the majority of births in Donegal (240), while 181 babies in the county were born outside marriage.

The average age of a mother (first birth only) in Donegal was 30 years. This compares with a slightly younger age for the average age of mothers – first birth outside marriage – which was 28 years.

The average age of a mother – outside marriage – was 29.9 years.

Meanwhile, other CSO figures released in recent days show there were 24 recorded Covid-19 deaths in Donegal during the first quarter of 2022.

Thirteen males and 11 females died from the virus between January to March of this year.

This compares with 641 deaths nationally, due to Covid-19. The majority of those (67.9 per cent) who passed away were aged 75 years and over.

In all, there were 329 deaths in Donegal during the first quarter of this year, due to various causes. More males (178), than females (151) died.
