DONEGAL pub chain McCafferty’s has entered the Dublin hospitality market with the purchase of The Barge.
Overlooking the Grand Canal at Charlemont Bridge, The Barge was formerly part of Sean Quinn’s business empire and is regarded as one of the capital’s best known licensed premises.
While the price paid for the bar has not been disclosed it is understood to have secured close to the €3.75 million selling agent CBRE had been guiding when it offered the pub to the market on behalf of liquidators in May.
The acquisition adds to an already impressive portfolio for the McCafferty’s group headed by Declan Boyle who opened his first bar in Donegal Town in 2016.
There are now McCafferty’s venues in 14 locations across Ireland, England and the Middle East.
The Barge will make it 15 with another on Hilton Yas Island in Abu Dhabi soon to follow.
Adjoining The Barge is the 190-bedroom Clayton Hotel while the nearby 193-bedroom Hilton Hotel has planning for an additional 130 rooms.
The Barge itself comprises a part two-storey/part three-storey over-basement licensed premises fitted in traditional style. It trades over three floors and extends to 360sq m (3,875sq ft).
Sales and lettings giant Bannon, which represented the purchaser, said on their website yesterday, “Bannon acted on behalf of the McCafferty’s Group with their acquisition of The Barge, the well established and high profile city centre pub premises.
“This is a perfect entry to the Dublin market for McCafferty’s.”
