MOTORISTS have had to replace their vehicle windscreens on numerous occasions because of loose chippings on a busy stretch of road in Letterkenny. Loose chippings and a poor surface on the Illistrin to Coolboy Road has been proving hazardous and expensive for local drivers.
Independent councillor Michael McBride has called on Donegal County Council to carry out an audit on the road surface from Illistrin to Coolboy, as the road surface is breaking up badly and motorists are reporting broken windscreens due to loose chippings on this stretch of road.
While no motorists have reported sustaining any injuries, they have been left with the financial cost of replacing their windscreens.
Cllr McBride is to raise the matter at the next meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Muncipal District on Tuesday in the Public Services Centre.
Speaking to the Donegal News, he said the matter urgently needs addressed in the interests of motorist safety.
“I know one motorist who has had to replace two windscreens because of the problem. The Illistrin to Coolboy Road was done 12 to 13 years ago, but the surface is in a poor condition now. There are loose chippings on the road. I think the condition of the road has worsened following the latest spell of snow and ice.
“A lot of traffic travels on that road each day, and I have been been told that there have been other people who have had to replace their windscreens as a result of the loose chippings.
“As it’s a national road, Donegal County Council would need to push to get Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to look at it as a matter or urgency.”
