LETTERKENNY shoppers will soon be able to deposit used plastic beverage bottles and aluminium cans in return for money-back vouchers as Lidl Ireland announces the roll out of their reverse vending machines.
Donegal County Council has granted permission to Lidl, Port Road, Ballyraine for a single storey extension to the front of the existing store to provide a Deposit Return Scheme facility.
Removal of the existing entrance/exit pod, removal of the existing trolley bay, the erection of a free standing trolley bay, alteration work to store elevation and the car park are also part of the development.
The Deposit Return Scheme reverse vending machines will be in the store pod where customers will be able to return their used and cleaned beverage bottles and aluminium cans on entering the store.
The wall mounted reverse vending machines will be serviced from the Deposit Return Scheme Room where all returned materials will be stored in separate larger sealed containers.
These containers will then be returned to Regional Distribution Centres where the central waste handling facility is operated.
According to the planning documents, this project underscores Lidl’s position as an industry leader in sustainability, ensuring Ireland delivers on its promise to implement the Irish Government’s Waste Action Plan for a Circular Economy with a sample, cost-effective solution.
Four conditions are attached to the development go-ahead.
These include the development being strictly carried out in accordance with lodged plans and details to define the permission.
All external finishes are to match those of the existing building in terms of colour, texture and materials, or as shown on the plans approved in the interests of visual amenity.
All external lights are to be adequately hooded and aligned to prevent direct spillage of light onto the public road.
No L.E.D., neon or similar lights are to be erected on the subject premises, structure, or site.
No digital displays or similar illuminated streaming media is to be erected or displayed on the premises, structure or site to cater for orderly development and to ensure public safety.
No surface water from the site is to be discharged to the public road or vice versa to prevent flooding.
