Letterkenny school scores a hit from the hot press

A SCHOOL in Letterkenny has launched its own song on YouTube for children stuck at home due to the coronavirus.

As pupils in Lurgybrack National School entered a third week of being home from school, Ms Bridghin Carr, penned ‘Our Song of Hope’ to help keep them engaged.

The song has been viewed thousands of times since it was posted to YouTube in the early hours of last Tuesday morning.

Speaking to the Donegal News Ms Carr, a job-sharing teacher at the school, explained how she taught the children how-to-record-at-home, using two phones, headphones and a hot-press!!

“A hot-press is the best place in the house for helping to muffle sounds. It worked out grand,” she laughed.

School principal Annraoi Cheevers, vice-principal Rosemary Daly, teachers and parents combined with the children to help make the project a success.

“I’ve been blown away by it all to be honest. The children themselves are thrilled and proud and they’ve every right to be, especially those children who might not have been confident enough to go into a recording studio in normal circumstances. It was a big ask to get them all to go into the hot-press and record themselves but it’s worked out great,” she said.

“The emphasis at this strange time for us all is to stay calm, remain positive and don’t panic. Children take their lead and learn from their parents and teachers. They watch how we respond to events and if we can be positive and creative I don’t think that’s a bad thing. If they look back on these times in years to come and remember the good times then we will have done our jobs well,” she said.

Ms Carr wrote the song in collaboration with conversations with the children via their parents on WhatsApp, recorded the song bits on a mobile phone and sent it out to the children in the school choir.

Those recording were then sent to Terry McGinty, who has the Finn Valley recording studio, and he pieced the bits together to produce a fantastic audio.

Meanwhile, the school organised an art project, asking children to send in Artwork to show what they have been up to at Home-School this past week some of which was incorporated into the video.

“The superstars of the whole concept coming to such swift fruition were the amazing children of Lurgybrack. You are a different breed of Superheroes. We did not allow the limits of social distancing to stop us, but embraced it to come up with an alternative plan to stay in touch and get the recording done. Thank you and stay at home,” she said.
