KILLEA FC are to make a return to the Inishowen League after an absence of eight years this weekend when they face Aileach in a League cup game tonight.
Club Chairman Dermot O’Donnell told the Donegal News he was delighted the club was back in the Inishowen League following seven years in the Ulster Senior League and a season in the Derry & District.
“We are very pleased to be back playing in the Inishowen League’s Premier Division and we’re hopeful that it’s a move that will ensure we can continue to provide football for the young players of this area long into the future,” he said.
“When we were in the Ulster Senior League it was difficult to field a team of locals and we only had maybe three or four on the team but our whole ethos is to have a club that represents this community and we feel certain that this will allow us to do that.”
Killea have been working hard to develop underage structures over recent years and with the housing boom having brought more people into the surrounding area to live the club chairman says they are keen to ensure they can cater for local lads coming through.
The team will be managed by former player Emmet McLaughlin with Sean Holmes as coach.
“The Inishowen League run a tight ship, it’s a good league with a good standard and we’re glad to be back competing there. It is a better league for us to be able to bring our young players through and hopefully we can attract some of the players from the area who are playing elsewhere to come back as well, we’re really looking forward to it.”
One player who has made the move back is former Finn Harps man Gary Crossan who has transferred from nearby Kildrum Tigers.
“We have always produced some great players and a lot who have played senior football and we hope to continue in that tradition but perhaps even get some of those players back and benefit from their experience when the time is right for them,” the club Chairman added.
