THE Covid vaccination centre at Letterkenny Institute of Technology will close in the coming days but the HSE is preparing to open a new centre in the town.
The last appointments at the LYIT vaccination centre will take place in early October, six months after the first vaccinations were administered there in March.
Some 93,000 doses of the Covid vaccine have been administered in the An Dánlann sports complex since that time.
The HSE said planning is currently underway for the next phase of the vaccination programme.
Exact dates
A spokesperson for the HSE thanked Letterkenny IT for making their facilities available to the programme.
“We are working closely with estates colleagues and the landlord to confirm the exact date that clinics will complete in this location and we will provide further communication nearer the time on this, along with details of where clinics will move to in the Letterkenny area,” the spokesperson said.
However, with first year students on campus from next week it is understood that the HSE has informed the LYIT authorities that clinics will cease by Tuesday, October 5, at the latest.
“Within the vaccination centre at LYIT and the satellite centres in Carndonagh and Burtonport, along with the original programme for Health Care Workers which started in the hospital, we have administered over 100,000 vaccines, a mix of dose 1 and dose 2 vaccinations. We are extremely pleased with this progress and we look forward to continuing.
93,000 vaccinations
“The LYIT centre has provided over 93,000 of these, with over 1,800 being delivered in satellite locations to date,” the spokesperson said.
Earlier this month a new satellite vaccination centre opened in Burtonport. It is currently open one day per week and use and demand is being closely monitored.
“We are delighted to be able to provide an additional location to give people in the region the extra opportunity to receive their vaccination closer to home.
“The new centre aims to supplement the vaccination work being carried out by the vaccination centre at LYIT, by GPs and also by pharmacies.
“We would encourage everyone to get their vaccine as soon as possible in order to have the best protection against Covid-19, including against the delta variant. We run frequent walk-in clinics at all of our vaccination centres and opening times for these can be found on hse.ie or saolta.ie,” the spokesperson said.
Walk-in clinic
The Letterkenny centre remained closed yesterday but will be open today, offering both the first dose and the second dose of a Covid-19 vaccine at a walk-in clinic as the roll-out moves into the final phase.
Meanwhile, the LYIT walk-in vaccination clinic will be open to students and staff as part of Vaccination Week.
The centre will be offering first and second dose Covid-19 vaccines to both staff and students across next week, in an effort to reach those who may not be fully vaccinated, in an aim to maximise vaccination as students return to the college campus.
