Feature film looking for extras in Rathmullan

FILM production company, Abú Media are looking for extras to take part in a new upcoming family entertainment feature film, Fidil Ghorm, which will be shot in Rathmullan this September and October.

There are a variety of extras needed for various roles. The film’s producers are Rathmullan native Pierce Boyce and Bríd Seoighe from Mayo.

Pierce is very excited to be bringing a feature film shoot back to his home town.

“It was always a dream of mine to have something exciting to shoot in Rathmullan, something that could possibly help the town and surrounding area get a little extra notice and international exposure,” he said.

“The writer Patricia Forde has never been to Rathmullan but having read the script and looking at the locations mentioned in it, we just knew that they were all to be found in and around Rathmullan so it seemed natural to seriously look at it as the main location.

“When we brought the director and director of photography up they just loved the place and then it was a case of seeing if all the preferred locations were free and thankfully it has all turned out great.”

The film is called Fidil Ghorm (The Blue Fiddle) and is part of the same CINE4 scheme that funded the hugely successful Oscar nominated An Cailín Ciúin this year.

The star of the film Molly is being played by screen newcomer Edith Lawlor, who recently won the U12 Fiddle category at the All Ireland Fleadh in Mullingar.

Other cast in the film include Siobhan O’Kelly who you may recognise from Casualty, Eastenders and An Klondike; Barry Mc Govern who has featured in Foundation and Penance and Marcus Lamb from Vikings: Valhalla and Dublin Murders.

In the story Molly is trying to help her sick father by becoming an expert fiddle player, hence the name The Blue Fiddle but the obstacle for her is that she has to try to convince master fiddle player but grumpy old curmudgeon Malachy to help her.

So the team are looking especially for people who can play a traditional Irish instrument.

“We’ll be turning Rathmullan into a Fleadh Ceol town, full of colour and music so we need plenty of musicians and dancers, young and old. A whole suite of brand new traditional Irish music has been composed for the film by Odhrán Ó’Caisaide so this is going to be a unique film in many respects and we can’t wait to get going.

“Hopefully we see plenty of locals and our neighbours from Ramelton, Milford, Carraigart and Kerrykeel coming forward to be extras,” Pierce added.

Pierce’s co-producer Bríd Seoighe explained how interested actors can get involved.

“Filming in and around the beautiful village of Rathmullan starting on September 18 and ending October 20. Anyone interested in wanting to become an extra in the film should send in contact details in the first instance to fidilghorm@gmail.com and call it ‘Extra’, along with contact details and where you are from but importantly listing any acting experience you might have and if you can speak Irish. We will then be drawing up a list of all the names and allocating suitable extras roles to them.”

CINE4 is an initiative for the development of Irish language feature films funded by a partnership of TG4, Screen Ireland and the Coimisiúin na Meán along with the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
