Cockhill Celtic battle well but Bray advance in FAI Cup

Cockhill Celtic 1 Bray Wanderers 3

Cockhill Celtic were knocked out of the FAI Cup in the first round by Bray Wanderers at the Charlie O’Donnell Sports Ground.

A ten minute first half spell in which Bray scored three times was ultimately what settled the game in favour of the First Division side.

The Inishowen men were well in the game in the opening quarter but the first goal came quickly after for the away side.

Chris Lyons got a cross in from the left and Ben Feeney took a touch on the penalty spot to take the ball backwards before firing a shot away on the swivel into the bottom left of the goal.

Soon after it was 2-0 as Callum Thompson found space inside the box on the left and he cut the ball low across to Lyons who got to the ball and first time fired into the top corner off the woodwork.

And two minutes later Bray scored a third when Thompson got the ball on the left and from 25 yards out he lobbed the ball over the backtracking Ciaran Gallagher.

At this point it may have looked like game over but Cockhill enjoyed a good spell in the last ten minutes of the half and they gave themselves a lifeline when Fionn McClure’s inswinging corner curled towards the front post and Moody couldn’t keep it out as he palmed it into the side netting, 3-1 at half-time.

Cockhill battled well in the second half but there were no more goals in the game as Bray advance to the last 16.
