BUNCRANA based songwriter Áine Durkin has won the Ros na Rún song contest. Launched in association with Raidió na Gaeltachta, the song contest challenged entrants with composing a Christmas themed Irish language song, to be performed at the charity concert in aid of Pieta House West, on Thursday, November 28, from 8pm in St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, Galway.

The song will join a great line up of performances from the cast and crew of Ros na Rún and acclaimed artist Brian Kennedy. Áine’s song will receive air play on Raidió na Gaeltachta, as well as being performed at the Ros na Rún Christmas concert, with Lorna and Laine Ní Mhaoileáin on vocals and Eoghan ó Mhaoileáin accompanying on guitar.

Speaking about her win Áine said, “I have always wanted to write an original Irish language song and this competition was the perfect opportunity. I knew that the melody would need to be attractive, so people would enjoying singing and humming it. When writing the lyrics, I really wanted the song to be all inclusive and to take into account all the emotions that are associated with Christmas- the happiness and the sadness. Some people are struggling and we need to help in any way we can!”

The prize for the winning song included a one week holiday for two in the Costa Del Sol in Spain, sponsored by Enjoy Travel, along with €300 spending money sponsored by Raidió na Gaeltachta. Áine has generously donated her holiday prize, which will be raffled off in aid of the ‘Katie Born to Run’ campaign. The €300 will be divided into equally between Pieta House and Bóthar.

Concert tickets are priced at €20 with 100% of the contributions being donated to the Pieta House West’s fundraising initiatives.
