Brian Carr co-opted onto Donegal County Council

SINN Féin’s Brian Carr has been temporarily co-opted onto Donegal County Council.

The motion was proposed at a special meeting of Donegal County Council today. The Glenties native will replace the outgoing Councillor, Marie Therese Gallagher.

Back in February, Marie Therese Gallagher announced that she would not be seeking re-election to the council. She has served on the council since 2007.

Mr Carr was also selected to contest the upcoming Local Election in June for Sinn Féin at a convention on February 27.

The new Councillor was given a warm welcome to the Chamber by fellow councillors and senior council staff.

Speaking yesterday, he said: “I firstly want to thank my friend, Marie Therese Gallagher, for handing me the reins and giving me this opportunity. Marie Therese has set the standard for what a County Councillor in this area should be and I plan to continue where she left off.

“I can’t wait to get the sleeves rolled up and get to work for the people of this area.

“It is such a great honour to be representing my local area on the council.”

Deputy Pearse Doherty said Mr Carr “will be a strong republican voice on the council and a committed representative for his local area”.

“He also brings a wealth of experience with him having been involved in community work as well as grassroots activism for the party for many years.

“He has been doing the work of a Councillor for a very long time now and I have no doubts that he will make a fantastic Councillor. He lives and breathes community work.”

Deputy Doherty also praised outgoing Cllr Marie Therese Gallagher, thanking her for her commitment to her local area and the party in Donegal.

She has served the people of the Glenties Municipal District since 2007 and at that time, she was the youngest member of Donegal County Council.

During her time as councillor, she served as Deputy Mayor for the county and as Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District.
