THE final of a nation-wide talent competition created by transition year students will be held in Letterkenny. Organised by students from Coláiste Ailigh, The Loreto Convent and St Eunan’s College, BEO aims to get young people interested in live music while at the same time promoting the cúpla focal.
It has involved the students organising a series of concerts and social workshops in their local area and this year BEO hosts its first nation-wide competition which sees other schools hold similar BEO events. The winners will receive €5000 for their school.
Some fantastic workshops and gigs have been happening all over the country and the excitement is building to see which schools will get through to the final on May 11 at Letterkenny’s Regional & Cultural Centre.
BEO have a prestigious judging panel consisting of Jackie Hayden (Contributing Editor and journalist with Hot Press), Paddy McKenna (RTÉ broadcaster and lead singer with Storyfold), Mary O’Hagan (Senior Producer of The Last Word on Today FM), Cian McCarthy (Musician, DJ and radio producer), Una Mullally (journalist and broadcaster) and well-known Derry concert promoter Brian Fisher.
To round things off there will a BEO gig to remember after the competition kicking off at 7pm (Admission €5) on Wednesday, May 11.
Opening will be young local Letterkenny band the Jamaican Vampires followed by Dublin Indie bands The Dirty 9’s , Storyfold with more bands set to be line up.
As the BEO competition draws to a close, the organisers would like to mention that none of this would have been possible without the sponsorship from Donegal County Council and the VEC and not least the tremendous support shown to BEO by the principals and transition year Co-ordinators of three schools and indeed from all the schools around the country who have taken part.
