Appointment of new Donegal manager imminent

SPECULATION was growing this evening that the new Donegal senior football manager will be formally unveiled at a meeting of the County Committee tomorrow night, Friday.

Current Kilcar boss Rory Gallagher has been tipped to succeed Jim McGuinness, beating off the challenge of former Naomh Conaill manager Cathal Corey – who is understood to have named members of the outgoing Donegal backroom team on his ticket – Paddy Carr and Anthony Harkin.

The three prinicpal officers of the County Board Sean Dunnion (Chairman), Aodh Mairtin O’Fearraigh (Secretary) and Cieran Kelly (Treasurer) were joined by former Donegal trainer Michael McGeehin and Gary Walsh, goalkeeper on the Donegal All-Ireland winning team in 1992, on the interview panel whch met the candidates towards the end of last week.

Meanwhile, outgoing Minor team manager Declan Bonner went head to head with the current Donegal U17 manager Shaun Paul Barrett (Milford) for the Minor job while former St Eunan’s manager Eamon O’Boyle, Maxi Curran, the current manager of the Letterkenny club and Gary McDaid (Buncrana) contested the U21 hotseat.

Again the three principal officers, together with Michael McGeehin, were part of the interview panel for the minor job where they were joined by Donegal Vocational School manager, Joe McKelvey.

Former County Board chairman Pat Conaghan and PJ McGowan were joined by the current chairman Sean Dunnion, vice chairman Denis Ellis and Liam Ward, the current Glenfin manager, on the interview panel for the U21 job.
