THE two whales and dolphin that washed up on a Dunfanaghy beach last weekend have now been buried.
Last weekend, local walkers on Trá Mór Beach in Dunfanaghy were left shocked when they found three dead animals stranded on the beach.
The animals are believed to be a male and female cuvier’s beaked whale and an adult common dolphin, and the animals may have been on the beach for a number of days before they were found.
Concerns had been raised about the disposal of the carcasses due to the inaccessibility to the beach, and the burial of large carcasses is usually prohibited.
However, a spokesperson for the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage today (Thursday) confirmed that the whales have now been buried.
“We can confirm that the National Parks andnd Wildlife service is currently unsure as to why or how they died, but they are looking into it.
“Donegal County Council now dealt with this and the whales have been buried. “
Trá Mór was recently named in the top ten Irish beaches by the Lonely Planet guide.
