A Donegal parish has received an unexpected windfall after a donation of €100,000 was made to the church.
Details of the donation were revealed to parishioners attending weekend Mass at St Columba’s Church in Drumoghill.
The money was left by a local woman who died almost three years ago.
It’s understood the donation was originally made to St. Columba’s Church in Termon a number of years ago but it was never spent.
It’s thought it had been intended to be used for the development of a new church in Termon.
The money was recently donated to the Drumoghill church and the congregation were informed of the donation last weekend.
A son of the lady who left the money has told the Donegal News that the family are happy that the money is now going to the church in Drumoghill.
“We’re glad to see the local chapel get the money,” he said.
“When she left the money to Termon chapel, she did so anonymously.”
The son said the family wanted to respect their mother’s intention to remain anonymous.
There are plans to alter and build an extension at St. Columba’s Church in Drumoghill.
A planning application was submitted to Donegal County Council for the development by parish priest Very Rev Martin Cunningham. Efforts to contact Fr. Cunningham for comment were unsuccessful at the time of going to press.
