Understrength Donegal well beaten by Kerry

Kerry 2-18 Donegal 0-10

An understrength Donegal side were well beaten by Kerry in their final league game in Tralee today.

Donegal retained their Division 1 status with a win over Tyrone last week, and Declan Bonner took the opportunity to rest some of his star men ahead of the Championship opener next Sunday.

There were eight changes to the starting team with influential players like Michael Murphy, Ryan McHugh, Hugh McFadden, and Eoghan ‘Ban’ Gallagher not involved.

Donegal actually started well and led by 0-3 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter, with Ciaran Thompson scoring a lovely brace from play.

However, Kerry dominated from there on with Sean O’Shea and Gavin White hitting the net, and they could have had even more goals.

Kerry continued to control matters after the restart with David Clifford and Tony Brosnan in great form. The home side ran out easy winners and were crowned Division 1 league champions.

The second half was tough going for Donegal, who only managed two points against the breeze. One positive was a senior debut for promising Carndonagh youngster Conor O’Donnell.

Donegal take on Tyrone in the Ulster Senior Football Championship quarter-final next Sunday in Ballybofey.
