Soccer: Inter-Provincials
By Liam Porter
The Manager of the Ulster Senior League squad, Donal O’Brien says he believes his team is well capable of bringing a third provincial title back to Donegal at the weekend.
O’Brien and Trevor Scanlan masterminded victory for the USL in the last two Inter-Provincial competitions and while the squad may be different this time around, the manager says there’s no reason the outcome should be any different.
“We have a different squad from the one that won the tournament for the past two years, but that doesn’t mean we have a weaker squad and I firmly believe that these lads are just as capable of going and doing as well for us this year.”
With Scanlan now head of the Finn Harps Academy, Swilly Rovers manager Jason Gibson and Bonagee boss Peter Moran join O’Brien’s management team and they’ll bring a much-changed looking Ulster squad with them to Leinster at the weekend.
Gone from the panel are players like Ryan Gildea, now with Rathmullan Celtic, David Shovlin who is injured and former Harps men Gerry Gill and Garbhan Friel, but there’s still loads of experience in the USL squad.
Ulster Senior League panel: Eugene Ferry (Bonagee United), Gavin Cullen (Cockhill Celtic), Gareth Breslin (Bonagee United), Shay Dunlop (Derry City), Jonathan Minnock (Letterkenny Rovers), Jack Blake (Derry City), Peter Doherty (Cockhill Celtic), Declan Lynch (Bonagee United), Mark Forker (Letterkenny Rovers), Malachy McDermott (Cockhill Celtic), Jonny Bonner (Letterkenny Rovers), Laurence Toland (Swilly Rovers), Brendan McLaughlin (Cockhill Celtic), Christy McLaughlin (Cockhill Celtic), Mark Moran (Cockhill Celtic), Darren McElwaine (Letterkenny Rovers), Stephen Mills (Derry City), Ronan Wilson (Derry City), Paul McVeigh (Letterkenny Rovers), Ryan Doherty (Derry City).
