Tractor draw launched for Donegal Hospice

BY JEROME HUGHES

AN exciting fundraiser has been launched to support the development of Donegal Hospice, offering a somewhat unique prize – a highly sought-after Massey Ferguson 135 tractor.

Orla Neely and her husband Mark embarked on a journey across Ireland to acquire the perfect tractor, aiming to raise as much money as possible for the cause.

Production of the MF135 began in 1964 and ended in 1975.

It remains highly popular for nostalgic reasons and its simple mechanical construction and high reliability.

“I know very little about tractors but I do know that the 135 is effectively a collectors’ item. Mark, in particular, has been all over the country looking at tractors, but the one we’ve got is clean and tidy, and in great condition,” explained Orla.

The highlight of the fundraiser will be the draw for the tractor and other exciting prizes, set to take place in Kilmacrennan on August 31. On the same day, there will be a Tractor Run and Barn Dance in the village featuring two bands led by Declan Nerney and David Craig.

“There will be a festival atmosphere in Kilmacrennan with something for everyone, including children, of course. We’re spreading the word now so people can buy tickets for the raffle.

“The tractor is a fantastic prize, but there will also be loads of other great giveaways. Tickets are €10 each or three for €20.

“The people of Donegal are incredibly supportive when it’s needed. I want to thank everyone with all my heart who has donated to our fundraising campaigns in the past, and it would be wonderful to receive support again this time,” added Orla.

Last year, Orla and Mark raised more than €8,000 for the Donegal Down Syndrome Association and over €9,000 for BUMBLEance and the Little Blue Heroes Foundation.

“My mother passed away in 2022, and so my brother, Ryan, who has Down Syndrome, came to live with us. Donegal Down Syndrome has been enormously supportive to us and that’s why we did the fundraiser last year.

“We considered taking a year out, but then decided, No! – Donegal Hospice needs money for the extensions it’s doing,” said Orla.
