The Best XI I Played Against: Mickey Rodgers

Mickey Rodgers is a well-known figure in local soccer circles, and is currently manager of Convoy Arsenal.

He enjoyed a long and successful playing career and started off with Convoy before moving to Drumkeen United and then Bonagee United.

Rodgers won the Donegal League Premier Division with Drumoghill Celtic, and the Ulster Senior League title with Swilly Rovers.

He also enjoyed spells with Fanad United and Culdaff before finishing up with Convoy when he was 38.

Rodgers went up against some quality players during his time and has this week picked the best 11 (4-3-3) he has faced, with honourable mentions for Seamie ‘Coshia’ Friel, George Grier, Maurice Toland and Damien Bradley.

Bosco Gallagher

Bosco Gallagher (Fanad United):
I played against Bosco a lot when he was with Fanad. He was a big, commanding goalkeeper who was always talking to his back four.

Dermot Kelly (Kildrum Tigers):
I went up against Dermot when he played with Kildrum. A really good defender, good on the ball, and loved a tackle.

John McElwaine

John McElwaine (Fanad United):
I played against John when he starred for Fanad. He was very cool and calm, never panicked, and very good on the ball.

Davy Deery (Fanad United):
I played alongside Davy in our younger years with Swilly Rovers, and again against him when he was at Fanad. A very commanding centre half, great in both boxes.

Shane Sweeney (Fanad United):
Another Fanad United player, Shane had a great left foot, and got up and down the pitch very well.

Paddy McGrenaghan

Paddy McGrenaghan (Fanad United and Finn Harps):
Paddy had great energy and was virtually impossible to dispossess when he had the ball.

Darren McCready (Kildrum Tigers): Darren was a strong player with Kildrum Tigers when I came up against him. Always wanted the ball, technically brilliant.

Kenny Harkin

Kenny Harkin (Fanad United):
Kenny makes this list for most people and everyone can’t be wrong. For me one of the best midfielders Donegal has ever produced.

Colm McGonigle (Fanad United):
Colm had a great senior career and then moved to Fanad. He was brilliant at hold up play and knew where the goals were.

Ronan Coyle in action for Kildrum.

Ronan Coyle (Quigle’s Point Swifts and Kildrum Tigers): The best striker the USL has seen. I was lucky enough to also manage him with Drumkeen towards the end of his career, class act and a real gentleman.

Liam Coyle (Derry City): I went up against Liam a few times. A great first touch and he knew where the goals were. Only for injury I have no doubt he would have had a career across the water.
