Tánaiste vows justice for Seán Rooney’s killers

TÁNAISTE Micheál Martin has vowed that those responsible for the murder of Private Seán Rooney from Newtowncunningham will be brought to justice.

The 24-year-old UN peacekeeper was killed on active service in the Lebanon in December 2022.

He had been serving in Lebanon for the second time on peacekeeping duty with the United Nations when his convoy came under attack.

Trooper Shane Kearney (22) suffered serious injury in the incident.

The Government is not happy with the progress of the investigation into the murder of Private Rooney.

Mr Martin yesterday held talks in Beirut with Lebanese Minister for Defence Maurice Sleem and Minister for Foreign Affairs Abdallah BouHabib.

He travelled to Camp Shamrock to greet the members of the 124th Infantry Battalion, Ireland’s largest overseas deployment.

“A central focus of my visit will be meeting with Lebanese ministers to communicate the absolute determination of the Irish Government to ensure those responsible for Private Rooney’s death are brought to justice,” said Mr Martin.
