WHEN Brendan Cavanagh lost his mobility, he found a new lease of life with Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA).
Brendan sadly passed away in 2017, but his family are now preparing to ‘take the plunge’ by each doing a bungee jump from Moville pier next month.
They hope to raise much needed proceeds for IWA, which hosts six services in Donegal each week.
Services are person centred and in five locations, Letterkenny, Donegal Town, Malin, Carrigart and Dobhair.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Brendan’s daughter, Roisin Cavanagh, organiser of the charity bungee jump, said IWA was there for her father during a very uncertain and life-changing time.
“My father had an operation when he was 26 which left him with a nerve hitting his spine. Slowly, his mobility declined and he ended up using a wheelchair. He learned of IWA through his public health nurse and, with some assistance, he began attending the Malin centre.”
Roisin said IWA gave him a renewed confidence.
“He went to IWA every Tuesday and Friday for about six years prior to his death, and he absolutely loved it.
“He loved taking part in painting and going on day trips, but mostly it was the company that he loved. Without IWA, I don’t know if he would have had the same confidence going out and about. It took him a while to go out and about and IWA definitely helped with this.”
Sixty two family and friends will take part in bungee jumps at Moville pier on Friday, September 23.
The time is yet to be confirmed, but it is anticipated the event will get underway at midday.
It’s not the first time the kind-hearted family have leapt to fundraise, having arranged a parachute jump in 2018.
Proceeds raised were donated to IWA.
Roisin admitted there are some nerves.
“I have received a few texts from those taking part to say they are getting nervous now as the time draws closer,” she said.
Monies raised from the bungee jump will be divided among IWA, MS Ireland, Foyle Hospice and the Dementia Unit, Carndonagh.
“I don’t think there is a person or family in Donegal or Ireland who has not been supported by the incredible work of these charities,” said Roisin.
The bungee jumps will be followed by a family fun day with amusements at the pier. An iDonate page will be set up at the end of August/start of September for anyone who wishes to donate. Donations will also be taken in various shops in Moville.
Mary McGrenra, IWA Service Coordinator, praised the family organising the fundraiser.
“This is a great opportunity for all of the charities after a lean two years following on from Covid and lockdowns.”
