Shoot-out joy for McHugh

IT’S been quite a week for Donegal teenager Carl McHugh.

On Tuesday night the nineteen-year-old played centre-back for Bradford City as the League Two side pulled off one of the greatest cup shocks of modern times when they defeated Arsenal 3-2 on penalties in a quarter-final of the Capital One Cup at Valley Parade.

Within twenty-four hours the Bantams’ were also reinstated in the FA Cup following an appeal against their expulsion for fielding an ineligible player.

Tomorrow Carl and his team-mates return to npower League Two action with a trip to Southend United followed by another away day, against Wycombe, on Saturday week before Accrington Stanley and Rochdale visit Valley Parade over the Christmas holiday period.

The Lettermacaward native, formerly of Reading and Dundalk, scored his second goal of the season two weeks ago as Bradford drew 3-3 with Bristol Rovers.

A number of family and friends were in the attendance of 23,971 on Tuesday night to watch Bradford’s historic win. They included All-Ireland winners Patrick McBrearty and Anthony Thompson, who is McHugh’s sister Nicole’s boyfriend.

“Did that actually happen? Thanks so much for all the messages. Something special happening here,” McHugh tweeted after Tuesday night’s win.
