Sheephaven SAC recieve generous donation

Sheephaven SAC were the recipients of a very generous donation recently from the Gavin Family, from Mayo.

Last year Sheephaven Search and Recovery Unit were approached by the Gavins to help in a search in Canada for their son David, who had been lost in a drowning accident at Beaver Creek, which flows in the Columbia River.

Divers from Sheephaven S&R were to be dispatched to Canada last May, during a predicted lull in water levels in the vicinity of where David Gavin had last been seen, but he was found before that by the Calgary Canine Search Corps and the Donegal divers were not needed.

In recognition of what Sheephaven S&R give back to the community and particularly their willingness to assist in their search, the Gavins wanted to show their appreciation in manner that would make a tangible difference to Search and Recovery in the future.

So prior to a Saturday dive the Gavins family came to the clubhouse in Downings and got to meet the divers as they prepared to go out and later on, made a presentation of a cheque that will go to help the Sheephaven Search and Recovery Unit continue to do what they can into the future.

While it’s now a year since the club was asked to assist in Canada and much longer since David Gavin was lost, it is clear that his passing is still acutely felt but we can only hope that now he is laid to rest at home and with the passage of time his loved ones will get come comfort and a degree of closure.

Sheephaven divers wish to sincerely thank the Gavins for their donation and we hope that they got a better appreciation of what the club offers to the community after meeting the divers in Downings.
