There is profound sadness in Donegal sporting circles today following the passing of Ollie Horgan, aged 57.
The Salthill native made a massive imprint into the local football scene when he came to Donegal to teach at St Eunan’s College.
He quickly linked up with Fanad United and became a key player before stepping into management and he led the Traigh-a-Loch club to Ulster Senior League titles in 2006, 2007, and 2011.
There were also successes in the USL League Cup and the Knockalla Caravans Cup while Fanad were highly competitive in the FAI Intermediate Cup during his time in charge.
Horgan was then appointed as Finn Harps manager in November 2013.
The club were at a low ebb when he took the reins but he raised standards considerably during his nine years in the managerial dugout.
He led Harps to promotion twice and managed to keep the Ballybofey club in the Premier Division for six seasons, despite working off a much lesser budget than the full-time teams that he was up against.
Horgan then became assistant manager for John Caulfield at Galway United before stepping away earlier this month.
The popular coach was heavily involved with the Irish Schools team and brought success with numerous teams back to St Eunan’s College.
A man of huge intelligence and charisma, Horgan will be sorely missed by the football community in Ireland.
He is survived by his wife Anita and their children.
