Resident thought her number was up after latest near miss at busy junction

By Dionne Meehan

A CONCERNED resident in Lurgybrack is calling for ‘no overtaking’ signs to be installed at a busy Letterkenny junction after the latest incident on the road during which she was left “bumper to bumper” with a car coming the other way.

Highlighting the issue to the Donegal News this week, the resident spoke of encountering three “near misses” as she was waiting to turn off the N13, past Lurgybrack National School, onto the Cullion Road where she lives.

However, last week was the final straw when she was almost involved in a head on collision.

The incident happened while she was making her way home from work.

Witnessing a number of cars over-taking a tractor as it approached Letterkenny, she indicated to get into the lane on the N13 to turn right onto the Cullion Road.

However, one motorist overtaking couldn’t get in front of the tractor in time.

Narrowly missing a head on collision, the resident said they ended up “bonnet to bonnet”.

“We didn’t collide but it was for the sheer sake that I wasn’t moving,” she said.

“I thought my number was up that morning.”

This is just one of many occasions where this particular resident was seconds away from a collision.

“I just can’t understand the mentality of people that they think they can overtake and get back in front of the vehicle again when they see you sitting in a lane,” she said.

Now calling for ‘no overtaking’ signs to be installed at the junction, the resident said it is a wonder there hasn’t been an accident on that road.

Cllr Donal Coyle dubbed the road an “accident waiting to happen”.

“I have already asked that there be a ‘no overtaking’ sign put up there,” he said this week.

“A couple of months ago I had the motion in to council regarding that.”

With no action taken to resolve the problem, Cllr Coyle said he will be putting in another motion at the next council meeting.

“This lady is probably at her wits end,” he said.

“This junction is an accident waiting to happen and there is no doubt about that.”
