THERE was a sigh of relief from businesses in Ramelton as no damage came following yesterday’s flash flooding.
As a result of heavy rainfall and high tides, the River Lennon overflowed leaving the Shore Road impassable.
Milford Fire Service was called to assist with the heavy flooding which resulted in businesses escaping damage free.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Tricia Pyper, member of staff at L’Amour Beauty, Skin and Laser Clinic said thankfully they didn’t have any damage to their premises.
“The water was gone before we opened up,” she said with relief.
Redmond Smyth, who has an Air B&B on The Quay in Ramelton said there was no damage other than his wheely bin being swept out to sea.
“The buildings have been designed to be flood resilient,” he said.
PJ Bonner, Owner of Quayside Bistro and Shore Road Autos said it is incredible none of the businesses were affected when you see the photos of the Shore Road.
“We were very lucky to escape it, the whole road was flooded,” he said.
However, PJ only hopes businesses in Ramelton will be as lucky as more high tides are predicted over the next few days.
There is a history of pluvial (rainfall), fluvial (river) and tidal flooding in Ramelton with recent events recorded in August 2014, January 2012 and October and December 2011.
In 2021, a steering group was established between the Office of Public Works (OPW) and Donegal County Council to progress a flood relief scheme.
The purpose of the Flood Relief Scheme was to lessen the effects of flooding and to protect the community of Ramelton against future flooding.
