RAMELTON Historic Towns Initiative has been shortlisted for the Sustainable Heritage Award in the S.P.A.B. Heritage Awards 2022.
The S.P.A.B. announced a shortlist of 28 of the best built heritage projects and craftspeople from across the UK and Ireland.
The Ramelton Historic Towns Initiative was designed to help transform the historic centre of the beautiful 18th-century town.
The Sustainable Heritage Award celebrates projects that take a ‘whole building’ approach to sustainability.
Whilst its historic form is well-preserved, Ramelton’s buildings were suffering from advanced neglect.
The project’s streetscape improvements were intended to prompt further repairs, demonstrate traditional techniques and employ local tradespeople.
Repairs to roofs, chimneys and rainwater goods were undertaken first to arrest decay.
Lime render was reinstated where missing and historic windows and timber shop fronts were repaired and renewed.
Buildings were redecorated using a variety of materials, with priority given to traditional paints and washes.
The judges admired the project’s emphasis on retrofit training and traditional skills.
“With a pragmatic approach and a modest budget of only €508,000, it had a significant reach across the community to help give the town a sustainable future,” a spokesperson said.
The winners will receive their award from designer, writer and TV presenter Kevin McCloud on November 3 at an event at Conway Hall in London.
