PLANS for a new drainage system at Letterkenny General Hospital are to be lodged with the local authority next week, the Donegal News has learned.

The news comes ahead of a public board meeting of the West/North West Hospital Group in the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny on Tuesday next.

The agenda will include an update on the Letterkenny General Hospital (LGH) recovery plan and details of a major rebuilding programme, presented by Seán Murphy, General Manager of LGH and Bill Maher, Group CEO of the West/North West Hospital Group.
Plans for the new drainage system follow extensive testing and drilling at the hospital which suffered significant flood damage at the end of July, affecting 40 per cent of services.

“A report, which has been prepared by an army engineer, looks at taking a new drain around the perimeter of the site – parallel to the Long Lane – and away from the culvert which was the source of the flooding. I would expect a planning application for the new drain to be lodged inside the next week or two,” a source said.

With the likely hospital bill expected to be near €30 million, staff continue to work around the clock to resume all services.
It is anticipated that the planned re-opening of the Gynae ward on Monday week, September 23, will take further pressure off beds. A number of patients were on trolleys at Letterkenny General Hospital either receiving or awaiting treatment on Monday night.
