Odds Slashed On Wettest July On Record

BoyleSports has slashed the odds on a new rainfall record being clocked this month following reports of a gloomy outlook on the weather maps.

Met Éireann started the week on a dreary note by issuing a status yellow rain and thunderstorm warning covering most of the country and there isn’t much better to come with further warnings forecast later in the week.

Met Éireann has already reported the wettest March on record this year after averages were doused with downpours in the spring.

Consistent rainfall may be needed to break the record 577.9mm of rain that fell in the Ballaghbeama Gap, County Kerry in 1950, but the chances of July smashing its average have been revised down to just 2/1 from 6/1 this week.

The forecasts are in stark contrast to last year’s July climate, when the highest temperature in Ireland since 1887 was recorded in the Phoenix Park when thermometres hit 30°C. That fell just 0.3°C short of the all-time record clocked in Kilkenny 136 years ago and it’s a 7/1 shot that the long-standing high is scorched this summer.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Extreme weather records are coming under increasing threat these days so we’re hoping the recent flood of bets on the wettest July ever turn out to be a damp squib.”
