MINISTER for Health James Reilly TD was back in Letterkenny today to re-open the €22 million Emergency Department (ED) he officially opened just under a year ago.
After a spend of €1.65 million to restore the Emergency Department/Acute Medical Assessment Unit since the July flood, it will begin receiving patients again on Wednesday next, March 12 from 8 am. Emergency patients are asked to continue using the interim Emergency Department until then.
The new €1.65m unit will fully restore all Emergency Department facilities along with the 11 Bed Acute Medical Assessment Unit lost in the flood on July 26 which damaged 40 per cent of the hospital’s ground floor space and knocked out almost 90 per cent of services.
The insurance claim for the flooding has been settled with a payment of €34 million from the insurance company. This payment combined with around €10 million from the HSE should ensure the hospital is restored to a better, than before the flood, condition.
