More traffic lights for Letterkenny?

LETTERKENNY could be set to get more traffic lights in an attempt to deal with ongoing traffic issues.

It has been suggested that full signalised junctions be provided at Station Roundabout, Port Road Roundabout and Oatfield Roundabout to improve traffic management and pedestrian safety in the areas.

There is massive volumes of traffic travel through the three roundabouts daily and at peak times, the pressure causing major delays to motorists.

Speaking at a recent Letterkenny Milford MD meeting, Cllr Ciaran Brogan said the traffic lights had been recommended in 2009 and he believes the work should be reviewed as a “matter of urgency.”

“A lot of traffic management schemes have been carried out in Letterkenny over the years and some would argue the benefit of them.

“A signalised junction is set to be implemented at the Pole Star Roundabout very soon, however, in 2009, it was suggested that due to the pressure and volume of traffic at these roundabouts, they would merit a signalised junction.

“At the Station Roundabout, there is a very high volume of traffic and it is busy for both motorists and pedestrians, it can be a dangerous place so I think this should be addressed as a matter of urgency.

“These junctions would pass any survey for this work,” said Cllr Brogan.

The Letterkenny Integrated Land Use and Transportation study that was completed by WS Atkins in 2009 stated the following, “It is recommended that a scheme to replace the existing roundabouts at Oatfield Roundabout and Station Roundabout with a linked traffic signal junction arrangement, including formal pedestrian crossing facilities, is included within the Letterkenny ILUTS to be implemented in the short to medium term, subject to funding availability, the necessary statutory procedures and the availability of the required third part land.”

However the recommended work was not carried out.

Cllr Donal Coyle seconded the motion and questioned whether the funding had been applied for by the Council.

“This survey was carried out years ago and nothing has happened.

“I just wonder has there been a particular application made for funding for the two roundabouts mentioned in the report?

“There is nothing there and people are taking the chance to cross the road – there is not a line in the road.

“Signalised crossing is something that is badly needed.

“Has there been an effort made for the council to look for funding?,” questioned Cllr Coyle.

A spokesperson for Donegal County Council said the development of such a scheme should be reviewed as part of the overall traffic management and regeneration plan for Letterkenny.

“The MD will engage with Road Design and other relevant sections regarding the possible progression of this project.

“Progression of this project is subject to availability of funding.”
