McHugh gives CLG Naomh Muire 50,000 reasons to smile

Minister for the Gaeltacht Joe McHugh with members of CLG Naomh Muire following the announcement of a 50,000 euro grant to assist with the club’s preparations for Comortas Peile na Gaeltachta 2021.

A Lower Rosses GAA club has welcomed a financial injection of €50,000 to assist with its hosting of the All-Ireland Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta finals in 2021.

It will be the first time CLG Naomh Muire has staged the All-Ireland finals and the money will be used to upgrade the club’s facilities in preparation for the annual festival.

A new medical room, a referee’s room, a cultural room and a viewing balcony extension will all be constructed as the countdown to 2021 continues.

After learning of the €50,000 boost, Naomh Muire representative Niall MacEamharcaigh said yesterday the money meant “an awful lot to the club”.

“We are a small club doing a lot of good work in the community and to be receiving money like this as we are getting ready for 2021, it’s huge for us and we can’t thank Minister Joe McHugh and the Department enough.”

Mr MacEamharcaigh added that while things are progressing well towards the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta celebrations, much work remains to be done.

“We are going in the right direction although there is still a lot to be done because this is a huge festival.

“It is a massive event for the area and we are delighted that our club is going to be such a big part of that. It’s hard to express how important this money is and again, thank you to Minister McHugh for all his support.”

Traditionally Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta attracts teams from all over Ireland and from as far afield as London.

With thousands of people expected to descend on Kincasslagh and The Rosses in three years time, Joe McHugh said he was delighted to be backing the festival.

“This vital funding for a CLG Nah Mhuire in the heart of the Gaeltacht will make a massive difference to their preparations to host Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta in 2021,” Minister McHugh said.

“The competition has the potential to brings thousands of people to a region which they might not normally visit and I’m delighted that this Government is yet again able to help with a big boost for a local community.

“A grant like this to host the Comórtas will leave a legacy and in years to come people will be remembering the investment and take pride in the difference we are making.”
