Man jailed for causing €3,000 worth of damage to cars with a crutch

A MAN has been jailed for causing more than €3,000 in damage to vehicles in Ballybofey.

Leo Marley (34) of no fixed abode was sentenced at Monday’s sitting of Letterkenny District Court. Marley, the court was told, is already serving a three month sentence handed down last month for breaking into a garda station before Christmas for shelter because it was freezing outside.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins told Letterkenny District Court that three cars had damage to various doors and paintwork, with the total value of the damage being €3,100.

He is charged with three counts of damaging property belonging to another person contrary to section 2 (1) of the Criminal Damage Act, 1991.

The incident occurred on June 22, 2025 at McElhinney’s car park in Ballybofey.

Marley was arrested a short time later and admitted causing the damage.

Marley was identified by witnesses and by CCTV footage and was subsequently arrested, the court was told.

Solicitor Mr Patsy Gallagher told the court that they would
be award of his client, who
was jailed in January for breaking into a garda
station.

“He was sleeping in a tent. He has been getting some help while in prison and he hopes to engage with Saint Vincent De Paul when he gets out.

“He has been looking after himself since he was 14. He is now 34 years of age,” said Mr Gallagher.

Judge Emile Daly said that she was minded to hand down a three-month custodial sentence but in light of the plea she reduced the sentence to two months to run concurrently with the matters he is currently in prison on.
